Do I really have to remove the dash pad to access the back of the instrument panel..specifically the fuel gauge. 1964 Deville

Well that sucks.
I have a tester to verify that the gauge works. Or you can locate a 30 ohm rheostat and test it. I loan out the tester, with a security deposit.
Simple to operate the tester. Plug in 2 wires and turn the dial to the E,1/4, 1/2, 3.4 and F You can wath the gauge through the back window.

You are assuming there is something wrong with the gauge, there isn't! There's a dead bug behind the lens I want to clean out!
Speaking of assumptions, you assume that's I'm not willing and or able to turn a wrench lol! With over a decade experience as a GM heavy chassis mechanic I'm no stranger to turning wrenches. Since getting the car I've rebuilt the front suspension, brakes, installed fuel injection and retrofitted the A/C to R134a with the upgraded compressor.
Tosh, If you do end up needing a good tested fuel and temp gauge assembly with a very nice face I have one last one on hand. I have had a great run on them but am down to the last one on hand and this piece is about to move into the demand exceeds supply column in terms of parts I have on hand. The one last one I have has a very nice looking face, and again both gauges have been tested. Price is $75 and can ship 2 to 3 day Priority to US destinations for $10 for a final total of $85. If you or anyone needs it email me at jasonedge@nc.rr.com.
Wow, your post was just vague and we all assumed you had problems. Best of luck.
Wow...this is vague? "Do I really have to remove the dash pad to access the back of the instrument panel?"
If you think that's vague you must be a hoot at charades!
No offense taken :D
Back to the matter at hand....my chief concern is damaging the dash pad taking it out as it's the original piece and I'd hate to crack or deform it. Any tips and tricks for removing it safely?
It has been several years since I took mine out. If I remember correctly, the trickiest part was popping out the pins on the on the 2 "legs" circled below. I used a plastic pry tool and got them out with no damage. Overall, If you follow the directions in the shop manual it is not a difficult job. Good luck.
Tosh, In addition to Kurt's spot on reply regarding the pins on the 2 legs check out our Help Page article on removing the dash pad at http://6364cadillac.ning.com/profiles/blogs/dashpadremoval
In terms of not damaging anything here is a key item in the help item for 1964 dashes with the sensor grill:
==> Note: If you have a 64 Cadillac with AC and the in-car sensor and plastic grill in the outer ridge of the dash just left of center be sure to not grab the plastic grill as it is brittle and will break. Also be sure not to bump it into anything when removing. Treat that piece with respect as they are eash to break!
Also.. Don't put any directly pointed pressure on the dash pad top surface especially if it is on the dry brittle site like most of them. It only takes a bit of pressure to crack thru these unless you have one that is still soft.
Thanks!

Many owners have reported oil leaks at the rear main seal even after replacing the seal, myself included. Recently Tony Lentini found a Serviceman bulletin published in February 1965 which details a…Continue

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Who rebuilds original AC accumulator dryers for 1964 Cadillac? I have been on Classic auto air in Tampa FL wait list for over a year , There is one on Old air products web site that looks very similar to the original # 21-4214A but states it fits 1962 Gm cars, The one recommended for a 1964 Cadillac is half the length 21-4215A What is everyone using ? I would prefer to be as original as possible. Thanks
