63 cdv    have a nuisance leak that needs to be dealt with,  now i think its coming from around the oil pan, or from front engine cover  that little long black nipple always has a drip or right up near the front of the engine. there seems to be smear of oil on the pan and usually a drip off of the oil pan drain plug.

it extends back the next structure,, the semi circular plate right behind the oil pan,  (what is that btw?)  there seems to always be a little drip or two, hanging from that edge.    

 can oil pan be taken off with out removing engine, and gasket replaced,?  if not, i will have to take in,  i dont really have the support tools to get under and feel safe to take of the pan,, nor do i have access to a lift..so thatt would be reason to take in...

same for front engine cover.  if that is leaking, and the oil i see is wind blown drift down the side of the pan, which, as i said earlier, i have seen oil on the bottom of that,  it may be the culprit,, i tried the permatex gasket spread around the bottom like i did on my 73, (73 has held well) and it has worked for a while, but i think its found a new way out and I'm tired of looking at it.. 

so any suggestion would be appreciated as this is something i have never done, so i dont want to get sideways on it and have to tow it in if I ef it up.

thanks Tony,, i have part of the day off tomorrow, so will try to get the gunk and cleaning process done and begin on tracking it down from the others suggestions.

The harmonic balancer leaks because there is a groove worn into the sealing surface. The seal has worn the groove.  You can get a repair sleeve to go over the balancer sealing surface.  Pioneer HB-4124  Another common place for an oil leak is the fuel pump rear mount bolt. It is not a blind bolt hole, as it goes directly into the crank case.  Seal that bolt with RTV.

Tony, whats the best way to clean that oil cap cover,, or is a replacement required? also,two years ago, i gave the bottom and engine a good gunk clean, its now clean, but this new oil leak has put more of a slick on it as opposed to a really nasty gunked up engine,   i have the gunk, so will give it a try, then, try the clean and powder trick,, 

Russ,, does the engine cover have to come out to replace that Sleeve??

that was part of my original question,  does the engine hive to be removed for this sleeve repair, and if necessary, have to replace the oil pan gasket.

secondly what is that semi circular plate that is behind the oil pan,, is it part of the transmission or part of the engine..??

 is there a gasket on this inspection plate?  I'm guessing from the name, you can pretty easily remove this and its for looking into parts of the transmission.  would there be any reason for this to be leaking Trans fluid??  I'm just not familiar enough wither where fluids transport while in operation to know where of if fluid is ever there and if it can leak..

ok,,,  im not sure it s actually leaking there, or just blowback from the engine leak,, i de gunk ed today, going to wipe dry, then do the powder application and see what falls out..

Engine oil in the trans inspection cover is a leaking engine rear main seal.

Does transmission need to be sepated from engine on thiscas weell?

To clean the oil fill cap screen, I use brake parts cleaner in a spray can.   The harmonic balancer is removed with a special puller, and the repair sleeve slips onto it. I use a thread sealer to seal and lock it in place.   It takes the same special tool to install the harmonic balancer. Don't be the fool who hammers it hack on. You will ruin the part.

The 63 has a Hydro matic with a torus converter. The torus converter has a front plate with a large special O ring. That usually leaks first.  Remove the inspection cover and look to see if trans fluid is on the teeth for the starter, or at the back wall of the trans. On the teeth is a leaking tarus converter.  back wall is the front trans seal.   Either seal requires the trans to be pulled.

The same seal is used on the front engine cover for the harmonic balancer. You can get harmonic balancer installers.  I have a kit that is dual purpose.

i did the foot powder test,, little dibble around the fuel pump, so i pulled the rear bolt, and when i loosened it, it took little more than what it takes to loosen the valve cover bolts,,   really not anywhere near 15lbs i wouldnt guess ,, anyway,,  i got it out, per Russ instructions, and put the rtv black on the threads and to the back of the bolt and put it back in,, not a bad process,, that bolt is a little hidden, but other than that, not too bad,, so will see how that holds up.

i did find the leak that is leaving the spots, it turns out to be the transmission pan,  guessing the gasket is worn out on the back passenger side, thats where the drip was,, running hand over the edge, didnt find any red fluid on the other edges or anything fresh above the connection line..  so, will get a gasket and work on that,,   ]

i do know the valve covers are leaking so i will go head and do that as well,,,,,,its minor, but i dont like the look when i see it on the engine..

cleaned out the oil filter cap as well..

anyway, working through it all

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Who rebuilds original AC  accumulator dryers for 1964 Cadillac? I have been on Classic auto air in Tampa FL wait list for over a year ,  There is one on Old air products web site that looks very similar to the original # 21-4214A but states it fits 1962 Gm cars, The one recommended for a 1964 Cadillac is half the length 21-4215A    What  is everyone using ? I would prefer to be as original as possible. Thanks

'63 Eldorado trumpet horn + 2 standard horns restoration

My son, unbeknownst to me, had all three of the horns on our 1963 Eldorado completely restored. We had recently added the Eldorado trumpet horn to the two standard horns and the sound was not very good... we had heard good ones so we knew something was not right... but there was not much we could do to get better sound from the 3 horns.
