Hey all,  the noise im lonking here comes and goes.  Its not normally at startup, kind of shows after abput 10 minutes  and most hearable at idle.  Last i was hraering it when it was really hot out, but it went away.  I believe the heat out was causing a vapor problem.  I took car out in hi 80s for abput 40 minute ride, got to desination.   Car never went over 1/3 on temp gauge, thought i was good,  Got out, went in for about 2o min and car wouldnt start.  Fuel in bowl was sbout an eighth high. Being 40 min from home, i panicked, got on internet searched vapor lock and found i could try and pour cold water on fuel pump, lines to try and drop temp.   After about ten minutes of pouring on pump and lines, it started!  Got home no prob.  Outsode temp had dropped to 70s.

The "noise" had not been around for a week or two,  then today, back again.

Rrason i explained above was for recent driving for reference.

Here is the noise. It was dark out when i took it, seems more toward back of engine.  Any thoughts here

Thanks for listening

Water pump bearing ? ?

Would hope not,  only has 500 miles on it since rebuild

How would you check?

Sounds like valve train noise. Rockers getting oil?   The speed of the noise is half that of the RMP, valve train noise.

Would it be that intermittant?  For instance, not noisy for days?  Or apparently only after it warms up?  Or not do it at all in a 40 minute ride?

To check, would i let engine warm up, them remove valve cover to see if oil getting to rockers?

  • I did a lot of screwdriver to the parts like covers, exhaust pipes, alternator, cked belt tensions again, watee pump, oil pan cover listening for anything  odd.   Nothing came up, as unsxientific as it was.   Another neighbor came by,   he stuck his head in there,  and we got to looking at the power steering pump spindle.  It appearsxto hv some wobble in it.   Had to go to work b4 i couod pull the belt off to see if the spindles hadcany wobble manually. Im guessing there shoukd be no play in the spinning connection.    Tryin to avoid getting into the mess you descrbe under tge valves if possible.

Tony,   i took off ps belt, sqeek still there. So rulled it out. Allso took out that rattling heat riser, drivivng me nuts.

Started it up, the little bird sqeek came on back,  gave throttle, and i think you can hear 2, maybe three sldifferent sounds, the bird sqeek, maybe something in acceeleration, then on the decelleration, there is a different sort of noise, like a chain slipping.   The link follows,   take a listen, see what yall think.  Consensus seems to be rocker issue.. i am stone deaf in one ear so beaming in on the sound is difficult, so i used a plastic panel to try and block sound to try and isolate it, but i just cant seem to pinpoint even the side. I hv watched numerous utube videos as well trying to compare sounds, but they all seem to be rice burners, so who knows

Car idled about 40 minutes, no heat problem,  never left high side of the quarte line

I pulled the cover on driver side, turned on and ran about ten minutes Oil was squirting pretty good from under the rocker arms on spring 1, 2, 3, 4,    5 was less squirt, 6 even less. None on 7 or 8.  The squeek is a bit sharper w cover off.

Video attached.     https://youtu.be/9czNNWwq12Q.

I tried to get a light under the rocker arms to show the squirting action.   Does this comfirm suspicions as to the sound and probable cause?

And further, what do i need to do to correct?  Remove the RA assembly, check for blockage in the arm shaft?  Oil hole alignment?

Thanks

Is the lack of oil the likely cause the squeeking?

I will run it down, try to get it sorted out,    see if it stops the noise before breaking into the other  side.

Suggestions on cleaning?  Should i soak in gas or purple power, then blow out w compressed air, or run somethinf in there

Try oiling the rockers  by hand to see if the noise goes away.

I pulled them out, made effort to clean, felt like i did ok, but obviuosly not. I did check the wear as the manual suggested from wear area to none wear area of .oo3. Or .o3, cnt remeber which, but remeber them being ok. Took to napa, they had a gauge to measure.

My 1/2 cent is it does not sound like a bearing. Sounds like metal scraping as 2 parts move past each other. I would try to isolate the noise with an auto stethoscope if you have not already done so. I would not just be tearing into different parts of the engine and guessing. If in doubt get it to a seasoned professional engine mechanic especially with all the time and money you have invested in the rebuild. Perhaps it is something simple, but in case it is something more serious better to hand off to a pro.

I thought a metal rub too.  But i knew from last night, i could hear that sqeek much more prominately w the cover off.  In addition, oil was squirting frpm wrong place, and no oil was squirting on the rear cylinders.  I did find two rod cups in the arms were gumped up, but in the end the shaft was backward.

Edelbrock Carb Block off Plates

Posted by Chase on March 12, 2025 at 2:05pm 13 Comments

Hey guys,

I have installed the same Edelbrock carb and have done everything the same as Jason’s carb and intake project. In the spring and summer months the car starts, runs and idles great! In the fall and winter months on a cold start, the car starts awful and wants to die until it warms up. I have to keep my foot on the throttle until it warms up or it will idle just terrible and try to die. Once it’s warm, it runs fantastic! Whats going on here? I was thinking of removing the…

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?
