Just confirming some parts and fluids for a “master list” for 64 I’ve been attempting to curate. Would love your input!

This may be a fairly polarizing list and some may not agree. I intend this to be a growing list of common serviceable items. Yes, I know most are listed in the manual. But that was published 60 years ago, some of that stuff isn’t available anymore. Obviously, YMMV and by no means is this list gospel. I just think it’d be helpful to have one thread with most of the common parts and part #s for easy access

That's a good start, and thanks for your time and effort.

For oil, I also like Joe Gibbs Driven (available on Summit and others.) High ZDDP and lots of viscosity and blend choices.

I will never use a Fram oil filter. They are very cheaply made inside.

If you ever cut one open you'll know why you don't want to trust your engine to it.

I like Wix or NAPA.  And most of the premium-priced ones.

I have heard this about Fram filters. I am ashamed to admit my 64 Fltwd has a Fram on it now-but I needed one in a pinch and knew that one would fit. Truth be told-trying to find a more serviceable replacement for the oil filter is what led me down this rabbit hole to create a list for myself to refer back to with what people are commonly using. Figured others may find it useful as well.

I will have to check out Joe Gibbs. I like the idea of using a high ZDDP oil to begin with and not fiddling with additives.

Thanks for the addition!

I have been using Valvoline VR1 Racing oil for about 2 decades now. It comes conventional or synthetic, 10W-30 or 20W-50. Not the highest zinc content but much higher than your regular oil.  You can usually find these at AutoZone and other local auto parts stores.. at least the last time I checked, or Amazon can have it to you in a day.

As far as filters, there are reproduction original style filters out there with the attached  nut at bottom. They are not cheap if you can find them but seem to be very high quality.  Here are a couple of examples. If you just need a filter, almost all will work fine. I used Fram for first 10 years not knowing they were supposedly bad quality, but had zero issues with them. I know use the original style sourced filters. Here is a picture of a couple of them.  I ended up having to get them from another GM make repro site then painting the Cadillac Blue but they are the correct filter shown in all the original literature.

Thanks Jason! As always. I appreciate your expertise on these vehicles.

Do you happen to have a link or a part # of the original filters?

I will try to find that link.

I have been using Fram oil filters in all my cars for over 60 years with no issues

I use the larger PH 11 oil filter in my 64 429 since  car was new just because it is larger of the two available

I used mobile one in my 429 for most of its life until the formula was no long good for a flat tappet cam

The  current oil I am using is Castro GTX  10w 30 ( conventional oil ) Rislone ZDDP and STP

I went back to a conventional oil as my research indicated the ZDDP additive  mixes best with it

I have noticed a  reduction in oil seepage ( not much ever ) but  especially from my rear main crank seal that has always been light but now less ( we know how to fix  that issue  now  when the time comes due to my research discovery on the subject documented in the site library )

As I only use my 64 convert for less than 1000 miles a year these days the very expensive oil changes serve no purpose to me and became obsolete and the products I use are time tested for the long haul

This is not a very expensive oil change and some get crazy expensive like Amsoil

I have a theory that the conventional oil ( which was originally the stock oil ) pumps up the valve lifter just a bit more than the Syn oils I have used but this is just a seat of the pants observation on my part

I will not use anything but a 10w 30  weight oil in my 429 so that is a big part of getting an oil to be working correctly these days

The oil viscosity has all to do with bearing clearances and oil flow thru the engine oil  channels so we will keep that as Cadillac recommends

Thats my story that has worked for me

My 429’s performance is as good as it gets —-because it belongs to me ( life long gear head passionate  drag racer )

The fastest Mustang inn the USA —-is owned by one of the boys and his engine builder that spent there youth   in my back yard  working on there machines

A lot of midnight street racing for big money

The Mustangs owner is on the internet - —Petty small block .com

My sons friend since 6 years old

Correction —-make that —-Peteysmallblock.com

Pete's blue Fox body Mustang is fastest in USA eliminating the four of the  other invited  fastest Mustangs in his class in the USA

Also known as Team Morptorsport or Net Boys ( the white race car)

They call him — King of NY !!!!  and all came  out of my back yard

This does not include the 10-15  race motorcycles showing up every Sunday morning for years

Lower Front End Ball Joints

Posted by Logan Robb on May 11, 2023 at 9:04am 7 Comments

Good Morning all!

I took the 64 into the shop to have some adjustments completed and in the process decided to have the lower ball joints replaced as was recommended the last time I had it in. I ordered the parts and came into the shop. They quoted me nearly $500 to replace those lower ball joints requiring nearly 4hrs of labor. Now this is a reputable shop and they know me by name here and they will continue to get my business. I am just questioning what on earth is…

1964 power steering sector rebuild

Posted by CHRIS CARLSON on March 20, 2023 at 11:32pm 3 Comments

I'm having my steering sector rebuilt, and considering changing it from 20-1 ratio 4.2 turns lock to lock to 3.5 turns lock to lock @ 16-1 ratio, If i change from a 3 1/4" box to a 3" box i could have a 14-1 Ratio steering response would be faster, shorter distance to turn the wheel to get a response,   has anyone done this? and how do you like it? thank you

I've looked at the usual rubber sources but couldn't find any.
