AC/heater for 1964 Cadillac coupe de ville

Good morning!  I am Matias Adrogue.  I bought a 1964 Cadillac coupe de ville last year and am real close to the final restoration details!  I call her “Jaws 64”.  Pics will be posted soon.  I need advise regarding a AC/heater.  It came stock in the vehicle but it does not work.  A mechanic gave me a bid of $1700 to replace and repair.  I am ready to install a new system - Vintage Air or Old Air Products from Fort Worth Texas.  I would greatly appreciate your thoughts.  I read the great write up on the Help page with Old Air Products.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin

Thanks  so much for the heads up that your stock 64 comfort control is working just as it should when replacing the stock R12 Freon with the R437A Freon  and you have been using the latter for over 2 years with no issues

Good info and thanks for sharing what you have learned from your own testing and experience —priceless Mate !

Enjoy

OK, found the post in the CLC forum dated Sept. 2017 and its R437A.

It would seem, the gas has been in there longer than I thought too. LOL

Its pretty hard to read the little sticker after 2 years now.

Its either, R237A or R239A.

An A/C guy would know which is which.... I think.

Hmm, I might go back to posts in the CLC and see if its still there.

Kevin

Very Glad —to hear you are in a safer area away from the  fire danger for sure

So very hard to wrap my head around what is going on so near you

I think it is odd that when you delete a post on a thread  here for any reason that it does not get deleted on the dashboard -be it a duplication or and error correction

Might be something that Jason might look into to see if that issue can be improved somehow

If anybody has a handle on this  computer stuff it would be Jason — for sure !
We have a man with  an extraordinary range of skills that drives our website and a very exceptional 64 CDV.      ( with the very hard to locate Rare  long Eldo  HORN —I might ADD —LOL !!! )

Possible one of the best 64 restored CDV’s anyplace in the worlds
The more you get to know who he is the more his range of talents becomes very obvious ( building an extension on his home now — What ?? )

He single handily has made restoring our year car so much more easy than it would ever be with the info parts and award winning platform he has made available to the average owner of anyone taking on the restoration of our cars
A Truly priceless place to be  for any  Classic Antique Cadillac enthusiast with our year cars

Enjoy

Yeah Tony, I posted a reply, then noticed I left a word out, went to edit and deleted the friggin thing. I'll confirm it in the morning.

Jason will remember, when I posted what we were doing on the main Cadillac forum, a few poo parred the idea and carried on like a pork chop, the nimrods.

2 years on, still blowing friggin cold.

I'm pretty safe where we are Tony, we have no fires around the area at present, its the two states to the south, but thanks anyway.

Kevin

Do pls confirm the number of the Freon you have successfully been using as an R12 direct replacement for two years with correct good  results

Not sure why your post that  I am responding to did not get properly posted to this thread as it should have

You  are in our thought Mate

It is difficult to give general advice on this system as the -comfort control - stock system is very complicated with a lot of parts

If you  have any interest in getting the stock system to work again that is the way to go  in my opinion

You should acquire Cadillac Tim’s pamflet —from Russ ( on here ) and have who ever is fixing the system use his directions to get the stock system up and running again

The manual for the  64 year is misleading as there were service manual updates during the 64 year that make that info very dated and obsolete

The set the temp feature of the comfort control ( the first of its kind ) is a wonderful feature to have in Jaw 64

You call of coarse

The average cost of parts for stock restore is in the thousand dollar range plus a lot of time and labor removing and replacing them

The price you got seems very  low if you are talking about bringing the stock system back to life

The stock system works great when repaired

You will need to go to the 134a Freon and will need an STV part installed on the stock evaporator for the system to work correctly with that Freon

Old air parts is the place for either system you choose

Deal directly with them on line as there part are less expensive than buying them from eBay the other source

Good to have AC what ever way you choose to go

A lot of info in the — Search Engine - at the top right of the home page that has a lot of info on the subject

Do read the posts by the gentleman - Clovis -as he has been there done that with all the detail you need to redo the stock system with confidence

Enjoy
