What should end play be on the distributor shaft. Mine already has a fairly thick shim in there, but the play is still around 0.053"

Could this cause erractic ignition? It stumbled and backfire when trying to run

On a 1963 390"

There is alot of play in the distribs, but they work fine.

Thanks.

With the gears cut at a angle, does mean it puls the shaft down when running?

I would assume so.

That amount of play is normal ,  if you have side to  side play @ the breaker point cam because of a worn upper  bushing and shaft that would change the dwell, The point gap when its running but i doubt that's your problem. I would test your condenser with a condenser tester or replace it with a new condenser. if you have access to a working distributor machine preferably with a condenser tester meter , there are a series of tests to evaluate the overall condition of the distributor. I test all condensers even new ones before i install them. I would not purchase new old stock  condensers on line because they are 30& 40 & 50 years old and wont pass the leakage test 50% will fail. I perform distributor repair and testing & test them on a Sun 504 distributor machine.    Check your accelerator pump shot on the carburetor if that doesn't work  that would cause it to stumble & back fire,  also check for  vacuum leaks.

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?

Vintage Air AC

Posted by Chase on March 21, 2024 at 5:55am 0 Comments

Hey everyone, has anybody done a Vintage Air AC/Heat setup in their car? I want to bypass the old vacuum setup and go with a Vintage Air Gen 2 model. Before I get started, does anyone have any experience with this? (Which model to go with, do’s and dont’s, etc.) It looks pretty involved. Any and all info/pics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
