With 2 steps forward in squashing all the bugs with my 64 Fleetwood, there is always one step back! But that is part of the fun!

Recently, there has been a loud and VERY annoying squalling from the rear of the engine bay. I can't get myself far enough into the engine bay to hear exactly where it is coming from, but I am almost certain it is not any of the belts. I CAN get close enough to hear those areas and they are quite best I can tell. When revving the engine, the sound does not change to match the engine RPM

When removing the air cleaner, the sound does appear to get louder making me think that perhaps the carburetor is making a squealing noise? I am also thinking perhaps it could be a vacuum squeal? I have visually inspected all the vacuum lines that I can and jiggled them around and no change.

The other aspect of this is that it ONLY does it when warm. I can pull from driveway completely cold and drive down the hwy, no noise. But as soon as the engine is warmed thoroughly and I come back down to slower speeds or engine idle when pulling into my neighborhood, the squeal starts. Very puzzling. I am not sure what would even be located at the rear of the engine that would make noise like that.

I took a video of the noise tonight and I will try to upload. There isn't much in the way of visuals, but the sound is certainly present in the video.

Thanks!

Logan

Check out this thread. Kim posted a video and I did also. If it sounds like that, It's probably your intake manifold gasket.

There is the video I took last night. I’d say the issue is the gasket. Interesting how it just up and failed. I may try to tighten the intake bolts-perhaps that will buy me some time.

Thanks for inserting the thread! This forum has proven itself again!

I’m not sure I like the idea of spraying water on my intake and getting water into the engine. I’m sure a little won’t hurt-but not something I want to test

Intake gasket are pretty easy to swap out on these Cadillacs unlike the say small block Chevy where distributor needs to come up. I like the thick Best brand gaskets (see below) and sell for $20) which drops to $15 with Chapter Discount.  It would also be a good time to upgrade the intake fasteners to a nice cad plated set, if you have not already picked up a set from me. I sell these 20 pc sets for $30 but would do a deeper than normal discount and go $20 for a total of $35 for gasket set and fastener set. With the old bolts out, clean out the threads with air, etc, and chase with a tap or good bolt to make sure when you torque down it is pressing down correctly and evening. And of course you want to make sure both mating surfaces are clean. Here are the gaskets and the cad intake fastener set:

Edelbrock Carb Block off Plates

Posted by Chase on March 12, 2025 at 2:05pm 14 Comments

Hey guys,

I have installed the same Edelbrock carb and have done everything the same as Jason’s carb and intake project. In the spring and summer months the car starts, runs and idles great! In the fall and winter months on a cold start, the car starts awful and wants to die until it warms up. I have to keep my foot on the throttle until it warms up or it will idle just terrible and try to die. Once it’s warm, it runs fantastic! Whats going on here? I was thinking of removing the…

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?
