Just confirming some parts and fluids for a “master list” for 64 I’ve been attempting to curate. Would love your input!

This may be a fairly polarizing list and some may not agree. I intend this to be a growing list of common serviceable items. Yes, I know most are listed in the manual. But that was published 60 years ago, some of that stuff isn’t available anymore. Obviously, YMMV and by no means is this list gospel. I just think it’d be helpful to have one thread with most of the common parts and part #s for easy access

That's a good start, and thanks for your time and effort.

For oil, I also like Joe Gibbs Driven (available on Summit and others.) High ZDDP and lots of viscosity and blend choices.

I will never use a Fram oil filter. They are very cheaply made inside.

If you ever cut one open you'll know why you don't want to trust your engine to it.

I like Wix or NAPA.  And most of the premium-priced ones.

I have heard this about Fram filters. I am ashamed to admit my 64 Fltwd has a Fram on it now-but I needed one in a pinch and knew that one would fit. Truth be told-trying to find a more serviceable replacement for the oil filter is what led me down this rabbit hole to create a list for myself to refer back to with what people are commonly using. Figured others may find it useful as well.

I will have to check out Joe Gibbs. I like the idea of using a high ZDDP oil to begin with and not fiddling with additives.

Thanks for the addition!

I have been using Valvoline VR1 Racing oil for about 2 decades now. It comes conventional or synthetic, 10W-30 or 20W-50. Not the highest zinc content but much higher than your regular oil.  You can usually find these at AutoZone and other local auto parts stores.. at least the last time I checked, or Amazon can have it to you in a day.

As far as filters, there are reproduction original style filters out there with the attached  nut at bottom. They are not cheap if you can find them but seem to be very high quality.  Here are a couple of examples. If you just need a filter, almost all will work fine. I used Fram for first 10 years not knowing they were supposedly bad quality, but had zero issues with them. I know use the original style sourced filters. Here is a picture of a couple of them.  I ended up having to get them from another GM make repro site then painting the Cadillac Blue but they are the correct filter shown in all the original literature.

Thanks Jason! As always. I appreciate your expertise on these vehicles.

Do you happen to have a link or a part # of the original filters?

-Logan

I will try to find that link.

Edelbrock Carb Block off Plates

Posted by Chase on March 12, 2025 at 2:05pm 13 Comments

Hey guys,

I have installed the same Edelbrock carb and have done everything the same as Jason’s carb and intake project. In the spring and summer months the car starts, runs and idles great! In the fall and winter months on a cold start, the car starts awful and wants to die until it warms up. I have to keep my foot on the throttle until it warms up or it will idle just terrible and try to die. Once it’s warm, it runs fantastic! Whats going on here? I was thinking of removing the…

Loud air moving sound within carb with cleaner removed

Posted by Dave Fehrle on March 23, 2024 at 3:23pm 8 Comments

While checking my Carter carb with engine running, I took the air cleaner off and there was a very loud hissing sound of air. I placed a piece of paper over the carb and it didn’t move up or down, is this normal?
