Dear Listmates,

Does anyone have a replacement Carter AFB Carb (3655S) (or know where I can get one quickly) for my '64 De Ville Conv. (with the Transmission solenoid and bolt on mounting plate for the throttle assembly)?

I'm in a bit of jam...

My direct email is  PH. 626-375-5843.

Thanks, in advance!

Michael Vogler.

These 58+ year old carbs are getting harder and harder to find. They are out there but not as readily as they were 20 years ago. I have 6 customers on my Wait List looking with Wait Time spanning back a couple years. You may get lucky and find one "quickly". If not, the Eldelbrock 1406 is a good substitute with only a few issues that you will have to be addressed. For more info on this carb and the larger CFM 1400 check out this link: Carburetor - Edelbrock 1406 & 1411 Installation Summary

Thank you for the reply and suggestion.

Thank you, Ray.   I will check it out.

The Edelbrock 1406 would be a very great new carb for a 64 429 engine and bolts right on the old carbs location as an alternative to the old Carter carb

The intake manifold would have to be removed to plug the passages for the old choke as the new carb will have an electric choke

The  stock air cleaner will require an adapter if used or a good after market air clean will work ( Russ  Austin on here sells that )

Using the stock black spacer and all other stock  gaskets  under the new carb will require you now block one of the two pvc hose connection you will now have

The new carb has two vacuum ports for the dist vacuum  ( unlike the stock Carter ) and one of them will change the stock engines timing curve to produce more power than the stock carb does which is a feature I really like ( Edelbrock are the Performance people )

I did have to rejet  my 1406 going two adjustments richer for the fuel ( at the metering rods and jets ) we must use today with the help of the Edelbrock techs

All jets and metering rods are numbered so telling the techs what you have will allow them to suggest the next change you require

You want the spark plugs to be burning a brown paper bag color when the fuel mixture and internal cylinder temps are correct and performing to spec

That should help you make the chose based on the direction you choose to take your own ride ( completely stock — etc )

Edelbrock  1406 is a very good choice if the stock carb is no longer available as Jason has made very clear at this point in time

Edelbrock bought the rights to produce the Carter carb and did so with some changes to it ——a  larger carb venture and two vacuum ports being their improvements to the Carter design

With the stock air cleaner  on requiring a spacer to be using you will not be noticing that the carb was a replacement when the hood is up if that may be a concern

The above should inspire you in one direction or another

Can you consider rebuilding or having you stock carb rebuilt if you prefer to keep the car as stock as is possible ?

That will make the old carb perform like new again

You will have to figure out how to add the Ac idle up and  trans kick down switch  of the Carter  to the Edelbrock if you need them  ( I eliminated both of those with no notable issue to the cars performance )

Both suggestion will take some time to get done —-and you seem in a big hurry based your own needs which I do understand

Thank you for the detailed reply and advice. I'm trying to keep the car as stock as possible, but I recognize that the age of the car may make that impossible ultimately.  Mike

Have your carb rebuilt if that is  at all possible and will be the best way to keep the engine stock as is possible

That SB the easiest way to get the car back on the road and a new rebuilt carb is always a nice thing to have to keep  the engines performance as it was intended

I have a core that will need to be professionally rebuilt. It needs a good sonic cleaning.  100.00   It is the 3656S and has a rebuilt kick down switch and bracket.

Hello I've been restoring a 63 for way to many years. Down to almost done, but have issue with trans linkage, when column in park shift rod 2 inches short. everything original. been trying to find picture of manual rod hooked up from under car to see position of linkage. was wondering if anybody has access for pictures. I wanted to see if my manual linkage is bent  wrong out of the trans if somebody dropped the trans or something. Doesn't make sense why it doesn't work. Thanks for any input…

Torque converter grab when idling in Drive

Posted by Cliff Johnston on June 14, 2021 at 8:47pm 2 Comments

Hi Everyone, been quite a while since i have been on here.

I have had an issue with the idle on my 64 Coupe Deville ever since i have had it.

With the Idle set high enough that it is smooth, but still a nice idle, the RPM seems only slightly too high for the stall of the Torque Converter. And therefore it tends to sit there and grab and lunge a bit. So until now, i have been putting the car in Neutral at the lights to stop this happening.

I've had the car dyno tuned and…
