I am rebuilding 429 for 64 DeVille and got Felpro head gasket kit including valve stem seals. Is it recommended to install those even though they are not originally used? O-rings will be installed of course.

thanks in advance!

Hi Matti,

Yes its recommended. If you are able to read Swedish you can get additional information from TA Motor (best Company for Cadillac parts in Sweden).

Tack Anders! Jag har redan köpt ganska mycket från TA.

These kids today, I don't understand a word they say!

Always best to use valve stem seals as they prevent oil being sucked into the cylinders between the valve stem and valve guides ( especially intake valves )

This is often done by a machine shop when refreshing the heads as all the valve springs must be removed to install the valve stem seals at the top of the valve guides

The best valve stem seals I know are —PC Seals —as the top of the valve guide is cut by a machine shop to be installing those which are used in high performance race engines for there positive qualities

Always be very sure to be installing your rocker arms correctly as some of the best professional engine building shops have installed them wrong on newly rebuilt engines preventing proper oil flow to the heads —-on the ever so important —First break in run to seat the new engines metal parts

That first engine break in run will determine the condition of  the new engines performance and  longevity for the long haul so very important to get  that right  the first time

I am rebuilding it all by myself, with shop manual and other instructions. I have all the time in the world to get it right.
I am using original cam, crank, pistons, lifters, push rods, block, heads, valves, rocker arms. I need to replace 3 valves and 4 rocker arms only. Plus oil pump gears.  New rings of course. Do I still need to do the break in run?

The break in run is the first 30 minutes the engine runs  for the first time to be polishing all metal to metal surfaces so that they form a smooth  shinny surface between those metals for the life of the engine

Mostly it is about setting up the engine to fire up as quickly as is possible and then run the engine over 1000 RPMs for 30 minutes non stop and getting the engine to operating temp

After that run up you will need to re-torque all bolts to  the engines manuals  specs

Then removing any bugs that pop up like leaking hoses — etc

A very important procedure fir engine longevity and very much required

My concern is if the valve stem seals stay in the valve guides because they were not there originally. Are those 429 valve guides designed to keep stem seals in place?
If seals get loose they could create problems under rocker cover. I wonder if anyone in this group has added them.

I wanted to see if my manual linkage is bent  wrong out of the trans if somebody dropped the trans or something. Doesn't make sense why it doesn't work. Thanks for any input…

Torque converter grab when idling in Drive

Posted by Cliff Johnston on June 14, 2021 at 8:47pm 2 Comments

Hi Everyone, been quite a while since i have been on here.

I have had an issue with the idle on my 64 Coupe Deville ever since i have had it.

With the Idle set high enough that it is smooth, but still a nice idle, the RPM seems only slightly too high for the stall of the Torque Converter. And therefore it tends to sit there and grab and lunge a bit. So until now, i have been putting the car in Neutral at the lights to stop this happening.

I've had the car dyno tuned and…
